What is this intervertebral quren-daisque?
It is a type of fibro elastic cartilage located between two vertebrae and which connects them together. It also serves to absorb the shocks that the spinal column undergoes every day.
It is composed of two parts:
In the canter, a rounded mass made of a semi-liquid gelatinous substance composed of 88% water (nucleus pulposus).
All around, a fibrous ring composed of a series of elastic lamellae, implanted in the bony perimeter of the vertebral body; this ring forms a real weave of fibres which, in young subjects, prevents the substance of the nucleus from escaping.
Why back pain?
Heavy loads and one’s own weight cause: a compression of the vertebrae and the fibrous ring of the disc cracks; the gelatinous substance of the nucleus infiltrates these cracks and spreads to the peripheral lamellae of the ring and the paravertebral ligament; these containing many nerves, the pain appears: it is lumbago or “back pain”.
If the pain is sudden, a muscular contracture occurs by a reflex which blocks the movements of the trunk: it is lumbago or “back pain”.
Finally, if the gelatinous substance escapes from the fibro-ligamentous envelope, that is to say outside the disc, it passes into the spinal canal, and irritates the root of the sciatic nerve: it is sciatica.
